Odisha government will provide additional funds from the state budget for the Homibhava Cancer Hospital at Jatani. With bed capacity expanded to 385, the facility will serve patients across eastern India, reducing dependence on Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital for advanced cancer care.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 19: The Odisha government has decided to provide additional financial support from the state budget for the construction of the proposed Homibhava Cancer Hospital and Research Centre at Jatani in Khordha district, officials said on Wednesday.

The move follows Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s directive, marking a policy decision to ensure the project’s timely completion.

The hospital, being established under the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India, is modelled on the Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai. Initially planned with 200 beds, the capacity has now been expanded to 385, leading to a rise in construction costs. While Tata Steel Foundation is contributing funds, the state government will bear the additional expenditure required for infrastructure and bed expansion.

Officials said the investment will cover enhanced facilities, medical equipment and other critical infrastructure. The decision is expected to benefit not only patients from Odisha but also those from across eastern India, who otherwise travel to Mumbai for advanced cancer treatment.

The Chief Minister’s office noted that the hospital will serve as a regional hub for cancer care and research, reducing the burden on families forced to seek treatment outside the state. “This will be a landmark institution for Odisha, ensuring access to quality cancer care closer to home,” the statement said.

The project is seen as a major step in strengthening Odisha’s healthcare infrastructure. With cancer cases rising across the region, the hospital is expected to provide comprehensive treatment, research opportunities and training facilities for medical professionals.

By committing state funds, the government has underlined its priority to expand healthcare access and reduce patient dependency on distant centres. Once operational, the Homibhava Cancer Hospital at Jatani is expected to transform cancer care in Odisha and neighbouring states.
