Flood Relief / Odisha Govt Releases Rs10 Crore Relief Package for Four Flood-Affected Districts

Bhubaneswar, Sep 29: The Odisha government has sanctioned Rs10 crore in relief assistance for four districts affected by recent floods and heavy rainfall, with the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) releasing funds to support compensation for damaged houses, crop losses and expenditure incurred on relief camps, officials said on Tuesday.

The financial assistance has been allocated to Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Gajapati and Jharsuguda districts. District Collectors have been directed to ensure immediate disbursement of the relief amount to eligible beneficiaries and submit utilisation reports promptly.

District-wise allocation

Of the total assistance sanctioned, Nabarangpur district has received Rs5 crore, the highest among the four districts. Ganjam and Gajapati districts have been allotted Rs2 crore each, while Jharsuguda district has been provided Rs1 crore.

Officials said the funds would be utilised for providing house damage assistance, compensating farmers for crop losses and meeting the expenses of relief camps set up during the recent flood situation.

The State government has instructed district administrations to follow prescribed norms while distributing the assistance and ensure that affected families receive relief without delay.

Flood situation improving

The release of relief funds comes as Odisha continues recovery efforts following widespread flooding in several parts of the State. The recent flood situation affected thousands of villages and urban areas, prompting large-scale evacuation and relief operations.

According to official reports, around 1.4 lakh people were shifted to safer locations from vulnerable areas during the recent floods. Authorities stated that 7,834 villages across 1,360 gram panchayats and 219 urban wards were affected by inundation in varying degrees. Water levels in major rivers, including the Mahanadi and its tributaries, had triggered concerns in several districts, while northern Odisha districts bore the brunt of floods caused by overflowing rivers.

The Revenue and Disaster Management Department has, however, indicated that the overall situation is gradually improving as water levels in several rivers have started receding. District administrations, ODRAF, NDRF and Fire Services teams continue to remain engaged in relief and restoration activities across affected areas.

Focus on timely relief

Officials said the latest allocation is aimed at accelerating rehabilitation measures and ensuring timely assistance to affected households. The SRC has stressed transparency in distribution and directed district authorities to monitor the utilisation of funds closely so that support reaches those most in need.

The relief package is expected to provide immediate financial support to affected families as the State moves from emergency response to rehabilitation and recovery.
