Bhubaneswar, Oct 15: In a major relief for ration card beneficiaries across Odisha, the state government is considering a proposal to double the monthly rice allocation from 5 kg to 10 kg per person.
The move, if approved, will benefit approximately 3.25 crore people under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra confirmed the development, stating that the department has already sent a proposal to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for final approval.

✨“Many poor beneficiaries have expressed that 5 kg of rice per person is not sufficient. We are seriously considering increasing the quantity,” Minister Patra said.
The proposal comes in response to growing concerns over food security among economically weaker sections, especially in rural and tribal areas. The additional 5 kg of rice per person would be provided free of cost, ensuring that no family is left behind due to rising food prices or limited access.
If implemented, the scheme will significantly enhance the nutritional intake of millions of families and reduce their dependency on market purchases. The government is expected to bear the additional cost through state funds, as part of its commitment to welfare and inclusive growth.
The final decision is likely to be taken soon, with the Chief Minister expected to make an official announcement in the coming days. The move is being seen as both a welfare measure and a strategic step ahead of upcoming elections, aimed at strengthening grassroots support.
Currently, Odisha provides 5 kg of rice per person per month
under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The proposed increase would be an
additional state-sponsored benefit, making Odisha one of the few states to
offer such enhanced support.
