Bhubaneswar, Feb 11: In a significant step towards AI-driven governance, Odisha Housing and Urban Development (H&UD Dept.) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Kanpur’s AIRAWAT Research Foundation (ARF).

 

With an aim to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into urban administration, the collaboration is expected to make cities more sustainable, citizen-centric and future-ready.

 

The MoU was signed in the presence of the H&UD Department’s Additional Chief Secretary Usha Padhee, who stressed on Odisha’s commitment to build not just smart cities but also inclusive ones. “This partnership will not only enhance urban service delivery, but also strengthen data-driven decision-making, ensuring transparency and efficiency,” said Padhee.

ARF CEO Amar Nath said that such collaborations between governments and research institutions will help tailor AI solutions to the needs of citizens. ARF will act as the AI Innovation Partner, providing technical expertise and supporting the creation of a robust and responsible AI ecosystem in Odisha.

As part of the initiative, a dedicated AI Project Management Unit (AI-PMU) will be established within the department to coordinate AI programs. A long-term AI roadmap will be developed to modernize Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), while officials and staff will receive training on ethical and transparent AI applications.

 

The partnership also involves eGov Foundation, led by Dr. Subrata Biswal, which will play a key role in accelerating implementation. Senior officials of the department and members of the eGov team attended the MoU signing ceremony at Kharavela Bhavan.

 

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Odisha’s journey toward digital transformation, positioning the state as a leader in AI-enabled governance.
