Odisha’s mineral-rich land has revealed new treasures with the identification of diamond-bearing rocks in Nuapada district’s Kalmidadar area and ruby deposits in Hinjilibahal - Jilingibar under Junagarh block of Kalahandi.
Nuapada, Mar 19: Odisha’s mineral-rich land has once again revealed its hidden wealth. Recent exploration has identified potential deposits of diamonds and gemstones in parts of Nuapada and Kalahandi districts, sparking hopes of a new chapter in the state’s mining sector.
According to a written reply presented in the Assembly by Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, diamond-bearing rocks have been traced in Nuapada block’s Kalmidadar area. Similarly, signs of ruby deposits have been found in Hinjilibahal–Jilingibar under Junagarh block of Kalahandi district. These findings are currently undergoing scientific, economic, and technical evaluation to determine their feasibility for commercial mining.
While diamonds and rubies have raised excitement, the minister clarified that no pearl mines have been identified in Odisha so far. However, the state continues to be a hub for other valuable minerals. In Deogarh district’s Riamal block, copper-bearing rocks, graphite, nickel, and traces of gold have been discovered in Adas-Rampalli. Likewise, in Mayurbhanj district’s Kuliana block, gold has been assessed alongside copper-bearing rocks in Madanasahi–Kanjia. Keonjhar district also holds promise, with gold-bearing rocks identified in Gopur–Jaladiha under Bansapal block.

These discoveries highlight Odisha’s vast untapped mineral potential. If proven commercially viable, diamond and ruby mining could significantly boost the state’s economy, create employment opportunities, and attract global investment. At the same time, the presence of gold, copper, and other minerals reinforces Odisha’s position as one of India’s most resource-rich states.
The exploration is still in its early stages, and experts caution that detailed studies are essential before large-scale extraction can begin. Nevertheless, the findings have already generated optimism about Odisha’s future as a major player in the gemstone and precious metals industry.
