Odisha CM Thanks PM Modi As Capital Region Ring Road Gets CCEA Nod

Key Points

Rs 8,307 Cr ring road to ease traffic in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack

It will connect highways, ports, airport, and logistics hubs for multi-modal growth

Bhubaneswar, Aug 19: In a major infrastructure breakthrough for Odisha, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a 6-lane access-controlled Capital Region Ring Road project.

Spanning 110.875 km, the proposed Bhubaneswar Bypass aims to decongest traffic in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, while unlocking new avenues for economic growth.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to PM Modi and Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari via a post on X, calling the project a “landmark infrastructure initiative” that will “strengthen connectivity, enhance logistics efficiency, and accelerate prosperity in Odisha and the eastern region.”

The Rs8,307.74 crore project will integrate with three National Highways (NH-55, NH-57, NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65), offering seamless connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes. It is expected to generate 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment, making it a significant job creator.

The corridor will also enhance multi-modal integration, connecting 10 Economic Nodes, 4 Social Nodes, and 5 Logistic Nodes, including 1 major railway station, 1 airport, 1 proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and 2 major ports. This will facilitate faster movement of goods and passengers across Odisha and beyond.

Currently, the stretch between Rameswar and Tangi faces severe congestion due to high traffic volumes through urban centers like Khordha, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack. The new ring road, developed as a Greenfield Highway, will offer a high-speed alternative, reducing travel time and improving safety.

The project is a key component of the Purvodaya mission, aimed at accelerating development in eastern India through strategic infrastructure investments.
