Weather Alert / Odisha Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Cyclonic Circulation Likely Over Bay of Bengal from Sept 9

Bhubaneswar, Sep 7: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a possible cyclonic circulation forming over the northwest Bay of Bengal around September 9, which is expected to intensify rainfall across Odisha.

While the state currently has no active weather systems and only light to moderate showers, rainfall activity is likely to increase significantly from September 9 onwards.

According to IMD, the developing system could trigger heavy rainfall in several districts. A yellow warning has been issued for 17 districts including Gajapati, Ganjam, Khordha, Puri, Nayagada, Kataka, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Baleshwar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Anugola, Debagada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundaragada, forecasting thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph within the next 24 hours.

For September 8, warnings extend to 15 districts including Jharsuguda, with similar conditions expected.

From September 9 to 11, heavy rainfall is predicted in Mayurbhanj, Baleshwar, and Kendujhar, with yellow warnings in place for three consecutive days. Rainfall intensity is expected to reduce after September 11.

In the past 24 hours, scattered light to moderate showers were recorded across the state, with isolated heavy rainfall. Mayurbhanj’s GB Nagar registered the highest at 66 mm.

Since June 1, Odisha has recorded 1179.7 mm of rainfall, which is 20 per cent above the normal average of 984.9 mm. While 11 districts have received normal rainfall, 16 districts have experienced excess rainfall, and one district has recorded large excess. Gajapati and Nabarangpur, however, continue to face deficient rainfall.
