Bhubaneswar, Sept 20: The Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed yet another day of disruption as members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) stormed the well of the House, demanding an urgent discussion on the alleged fertiliser scarcity and black marketing affecting farmers across the state.

The proceedings of the House began with a solemn tribute to former Biramitrapur MLA George Tirkey, who passed away on Saturday morning. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi moved the condolence motion, expressing deep sorrow over the demise of Tirkey, a prominent tribal leader known for his contributions to the upliftment of marginalized communities in the state.

The motion was seconded by Deputy Leader of Opposition Prasanna Acharya and Congress CLP leader Rama Chandra Kadam, reflecting bipartisan respect for Tirkey’s legacy. Members of the House observed a moment of silence in his memory, acknowledging his decades-long service and influence in Odisha’s political and social aspects.

The uproar began shortly after the Question Hour commenced, with BJD legislators waving placards and chanting slogans near Speaker Surama Padhy’s podium. Despite repeated appeals from the Speaker to restore order, the chaos persisted, forcing an adjournment of proceedings until 4 PM. A similar scene unfolded when the House reconvened later, resulting in a full-day adjournment.

The BJD accused the state government of failing to ensure adequate fertiliser supply, alleging that farmers are being compelled to buy it from the open market at inflated prices. The party demanded that regular House business be suspended to address the issue, which they claim is causing widespread distress in rural Odisha.

Adding to the political heat, BJP leader Irasis Acharya criticized both BJD and Congress, accusing them of neglecting Odisha’s development and avoiding debate on the fertiliser crisis. He asserted that the BJP remains the only party genuinely committed to farmers’ welfare.

This marks the third consecutive day of disruption in the Monsoon Session, with Saturday’s proceedings also washed out over the same issue.
