Odisha Assembly Session 2026 / Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session to Begin Tomorrow; Six Bills on Agenda

Bhubaneswar, Sept 21: The Seventh Session of the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly will commence on September 22 and continue till October 3. According to the schedule, the Monsoon Session will have nine business days, with one holiday and two ‘No Meeting Days’, and six bills likely to be tabled, officials said on Monday.

All-Party Meeting

Ahead of the session, Speaker Surama Padhy chaired an all-party meeting here today to ensure smooth conduct of proceedings, even as political temperatures rose with opposition parties preparing to corner the government over several issues.

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Deputy Speaker Bhawani Shankar Bhoi, Opposition Deputy Leader Prasanna Acharya, Opposition Chief Whip Pramila Mallik, Congress Legislature Party Deputy Leader Ashok Das and other senior leaders from all parties attended the meeting.

The Speaker urged cooperation from all sides to maintain the decorum of the House.

Opposition Strategy

The opposition, particularly the BJD, has signalled its intent to press for a motion on the MMDR Amendment Act. Party leaders have also drawn up plans to raise issues such as textbook errors and rising prices. At Shankha Bhavan, BJD legislators met under the leadership of the Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik to finalise their strategy.

Senior Congress MLA Ashok Das noted that his party will raise issues concerning Odisha’s interests, including the MMDR Amendment Act, and seek discussions on the floor of the House during the upcoming monsoon session.

Government’s Counter

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling said the state government is ready to discuss issues raised in the Assembly. He added that the Speaker appealed to all members to ensure that the Assembly functions smoothly and peacefully.

“Whatever Bills and issues come up during the session should be discussed constructively,” Mahaling said.

Security Measures

With political tensions running high, security around the Assembly has been tightened. As many as 30 platoons of police have been deployed, with a three-tier security ring in place to prevent any disturbances. In addition, the dog squad and bomb squad will remain on standby to respond to emergencies.
