Odisha Assembly Session 2026 / Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session Adjourned Sine Die

Bhubaneswar, Sep 28: The Odisha Assembly’s monsoon session was adjourned sine die on Monday, five days ahead of schedule, as the government cited worsening flood conditions across the state.

The move came amid uproar in the House, with Opposition members staging protests over the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, recently passed by the Parliament.

The session, originally slated to continue till October 3, was curtailed after the ruling party moved a proposal to adjourn the House. The motion, introduced by Chief Whip Saroj Kumar Pradhan, was supported by legislators Upasana Mohapatra and Laxman Bag.

Speaker Surama Padhy accepted the proposal, reducing the nine‑day schedule to just five working days. During this truncated period, four important bills were passed.

Earlier in the day, proceedings were disrupted multiple times for the fifth consecutive working day. Speaker Padhy repeatedly appealed to members to allow the House to function, but her requests went unheeded.

Flood Situation in Odisha:

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has worsened flooding in several districts, with rivers swelling and low‑lying areas inundated. In the Mahanadi basin, rainfall in Chhattisgarh’s upper catchments has increased inflows into Hirakud reservoir, prompting release of excess water.

Relief and rescue operations are underway, with the state administration pressed into service to provide food, shelter, and medical aid. The government has cited prioritizing flood response as a key reason for curtailing the Assembly session.
