Meteorologists warn of a possible Bay of Bengal low‑pressure around October 12-13, raising cyclone fears in Odisha as coastal residents brace for rain‑soaked festivities amid unusual weather swings.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 4: October has once again stirred anxiety along Odisha’s coast, with meteorologists warning of a possible low‑pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal in the second week of the month.

Experts say the system could take shape between October 12 and 13, though its intensity and trajectory remain uncertain.

While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet issued a formal forecast, weather scientists caution that festive celebrations may be dampened by heavy rains. “Whether this system strengthens into a cyclone will only be clear once it develops into a low pressure,” they noted.

The prospect of another storm has revived memories of past devastations - from the Super Cyclone to Phailin, Fani and Hudhud - all of which left Odisha’s coastal districts severely battered.

The mere mention of a low‑pressure system in October has heightened fears among residents, especially in southern coastal regions.

Meteorologists explain that monsoon withdrawal often creates favorable conditions for such systems.

This year, unusual weather fluctuations have already unsettled people: sudden downpours followed by scorching heat reminiscent of May, with temperatures hovering 4 degrees above normal. IMD has meanwhile predicted rainfall in coastal Odisha on October 6 and 7, adding to the uncertainty.
