Bhawanipatna, Sep 1: A newborn baby died at Kalahandi District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Bhawanipatna, with the family alleging that medical negligence led to the infant’s death.
According to the family, the wife of Markanda Bagarti from Pratappur village under Lanjigarh police station limits was admitted to the hospital for delivery. She underwent a caesarean section and gave birth to a baby boy.
The family alleged that the newborn did not receive the required medical attention promptly after birth. They claimed that they waited for hours with the baby in their arms while seeking medical assistance.
Later, as the newborn’s condition reportedly deteriorated, the family was advised to take the baby to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU). However, the family alleged that the infant was not admitted to the SNCU as the OT report had not been provided.

The newborn subsequently died, following which the family alleged that the death occurred due to negligence in treatment. They demanded an inquiry into the incident and strict action against those found responsible.

The deceased infant’s uncle, Ghanshyam Gauda, alleged that medical negligence led to the baby’s death. He said, “We came for the delivery of the baby, and the child was born. However, the baby’s condition became critical. We asked for a doctor, but no one came. The infant died only because of the doctors’ negligence. The government should take action against those responsible. We want justice.”
Following the family’s protest, Town Police reached the hospital and intervened. Police have initiated an inquiry into the incident.
Meanwhile, no response has so far been received from the DHH authorities regarding the allegations.
