Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: A monkey is battling for survival after suffering an electric shock inside an electrical transformer near Sailashree Vihar Square in Chandrasekharpur area of Bhubaneswar, a source said Monday.
According to the source, the monkey accidentally entered the transformer enclosure and was hurt after coming into contact with a live electric line. Locals noticed the animal in distress and immediately alerted the fire services.
A rescue team from the Chandrasekharpur Fire Station rushed to the spot and carefully extracted the critically injured monkey, taking necessary precautions due to the presence of live current. The animal was later shifted to the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) for emergency veterinary treatment.
Doctors said the monkey has sustained serious electrical burn injuries and remains in a critical condition.
What to Do in Case of Electric Shock: First Response Matters
Experts stress that the first few minutes after an electric shock are crucial, whether the victim is a human or an animal.
Do not touch the victim directly if they are still in contact with the electric source. Switch off the main power supply immediately or use a dry, non-conductive object such as a wooden stick to separate the victim from the source.
Call emergency services at once and seek medical or veterinary help.
If the victim is unconscious but breathing, place them in the recovery position.
If breathing has stopped and the power is off, begin CPR only if trained.
In animals, visible burns should not be touched; keep the animal calm and still until professional help arrives.
