Sonepur, Feb 5: They say, "Stick your nose in other people's business and you might not get it back." The saying turned grimly real in Odisha, as a man lost his life after trying to make peace between a couple.

The bizarre incident took place in Kudapada village under Biramaharajpur model police station in Odisha's Subarnapur district, a source said Thursday.

The deceased person was identified as Chandrakanta Jagdala.

According to the source, Panchu Karna and his wife had a major fallout on Wednesday evening. They were shouting at each other at the top of their voices. To amicably settle the dispute, Chandrakanta went to Panchu's house.

While Chandrakanta was trying to make peace between the husband and wife, out of sudden rage, Panchu struck the victim with a stick and the latter fell on the ground.

On being informed, locals took Chandrakanta to Subarnapur District Headquarter Hospital, where he breathed his last while receiving treatment, the source added.

The suspect, Panchu, fled the scene following the crime.

Afterwards, the victim's brother lodged an FIR at Biramaharajpur model police station. The police sent the body for a post-mortem and launched an investigation.

The incident comes amid Odisha witnessed a decline in murder cases.

According to the white paper -- circulated among the members of the Assembly ahead of the discussion on the Home Department budget in 2025 -- the state has reported 3,054 rape cases and 1,258 cases of murder in the calendar year 2024, while 2,826 rape and 1,362 murder cases were registered in different police stations of Odisha in 2023.

Rape cases have increased by 8 per cent, while cases of murder are down by 7.6 per cent.

A total of 2,14,113 cognisable cases, including 1,258 murders, 356 dacoities, 2,582 robberies, 6,408 burglaries, 17,805 thefts, 6,307 swindlings, 1,471 rioting, 3,054 rape, 12,375 motor vehicle accident and 1,62,497 other miscellaneous cases were reported during 2024.
