Rain Fury / Malkangiri Schools, Colleges To Remain Closed Tomorrow Amid Heavy Rainfall

Malkangiri, Sep 25: In view of the continuing heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning across the district, the Malkangiri district administration on Friday ordered the closure of all schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres on Saturday (September 26, 2026) to ensure the safety of students, officials said.

The directive covers every category of educational institution — Primary, Upper Primary, Secondary, Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas (OAV), Higher Secondary Schools and Degree Colleges. Both government and private institutions will remain shut for the day.

Officials said the decision was taken after reviewing the prevailing weather conditions and the risks posed to students commuting to classes. “The safety of children is paramount. With heavy rain and lightning continuing, we have decided to suspend academic activities for a day,” a senior district official noted.

However, teachers, non‑teaching staff and Anganwadi workers have been asked to report to duty as usual. Their services may be requisitioned by the administration for relief and restoration work in case of flood or rain‑related emergencies.

The administration clarified that if any examinations are scheduled by boards, councils or universities, they will be conducted as per the pre‑announced timetable without change.

The precautionary measure comes amid forecasts of further rainfall in southern Odisha districts. Malkangiri, which often faces flood‑like situations during prolonged spells of rain, has already reported waterlogging in several low‑lying areas.

The district administration urged residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms. Relief teams have been kept on standby to respond to any exigencies.

The closure order reflects the district’s proactive approach to safeguarding students while ensuring preparedness for possible rain‑related disruptions.
