Odisha Flood Update / Mahanadi Flood Threat: Badamba, Banki, Athagarh, Tigiria, Narsinghpur Among Kataka Areas On Alert

Kataka, Sep 27: The flood threat is mounting in several parts of Kataka district as rising water levels in the Mahanadi system and heavy discharge from Hirakud Dam are likely to affect low-lying areas of Badamba, Narsinghpur, Banki, Athagarh and Tigiria, a source informed today.

Around 4.58 lakh cusecs of water is currently flowing through Mundali, while the floodwater released from Hirakud is expected to reach the barrage tonight. The developing situation has put the administration on alert, with concerns growing over the impact on downstream areas.

The situation has intensified amid incessant rain triggered by a low-pressure system and increased inflow into the Hirakud reservoir.

Hirakud Opens 28 Gates
Meanwhile, Hirakud Dam has opened two more gates on Sunday, taking the total number of open gates to 28. Of these, 19 gates are open on the left side and nine on the right side.

The reservoir's water level currently stands at 628.33 feet, while inflow has reached 4,95,350 cusecs per second.

More than 4.70 lakh cusecs of water is being released through the 28 open gates.

Mundali Under Close Watch
At Mundali, 4.58 lakh cusecs of water is currently flowing through the barrage at the time of filing this report. With the additional floodwater from Hirakud expected to reach the area tonight, the downstream situation is being closely monitored.

The administration has remained alert and is keeping a watch on vulnerable and low-lying areas of Kataka district.

Parts of Badamba, Narsinghpur, Banki, Athagarh and Tigiria are among the areas that could be affected if the flood situation worsens.
