Low Pressure Area Forms Over Southeast BoB, Likely To Intensify In Next 24 Hours

Key Points

Weather scientist Umashankar Das confirmed the system’s formation at 5:30 AM and warned that it is likely to intensify further within the next 24 hours.
Bhubaneswar, Oct 24: A low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal early Friday morning, triggered by an upper air cyclonic circulation, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Weather scientist Umashankar Das confirmed the system’s formation at 5:30 AM and warned that it is likely to intensify further within the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the IMD bulletin noted that parts of Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh may experience light to moderate rainfall as the system evolves.

The weather department further stated that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall are likely across parts of Odisha over the next five days. While the system’s direct impact on Odisha is expected to be minimal, southern and coastal districts may still experience significant showers.

A yellow warning has been issued for 11 districts — Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Puri — forecasting lightning and rainfall within the next 24 hours. From October 25 onward, rainfall is expected to intensify, with wind speeds reaching 30–40 km/h during showers.

Meteorologists are closely monitoring the possibility of a cyclone forming toward the end of October. Earlier projections from the American GFS model indicated potential cyclonic development, and now weather scientist has reinforced the likelihood of a cyclone emerging in the final week of the month.

The current low-pressure system may be followed by two more — one around October 26 and another around October 29. The third system is expected to be the strongest. With the southwest monsoon retreating and the northeast monsoon gaining strength, conditions are ripe for cyclone formation in October, Dr. Sahu noted.

The Odisha government is on alert for any potential cyclone. Revenue Minister has stated that rainfall is expected to begin in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu from tomorrow, with coastal Odisha also likely to be affected. Even if the impact is limited, departments are prepared for emergency response.

Citizens have been urged not to believe in rumors and to remain calm and vigilant.
