Child protection officials in Kandhamal rescue a 16-year-old from forced marriage, adding to dozens of cases prevented, as awareness drives intensify to make the district child marriage-free.

Phulbani, Jun 30: Despite repeated awareness campaigns, child marriage continues to be a pressing issue in Kandhamal district of Odisha. However, timely intervention by child protection officials has once again saved a minor girl from being forced into marriage.

The incident occurred in the Gochhapada police limits, where a 16-year-old girl was about to be married to a youth from Phiringia.

Acting on information received by the Child Helpline, members of the District Child Protection Unit, accompanied by police, reached the girl’s residence. Before the team arrived, the groom and his relatives fled the spot, but officials successfully rescued the minor bride.

This case adds to the growing list of child marriages prevented in Kandhamal. Since January this year, eight child marriages have been stopped. In 2024, 56 cases were prevented, while in 2025, 52 minors were rescued from forced marriages.

Officials emphasized that awareness drives are being conducted across the district to educate communities about the dangers of child marriage.

Child protection worker Manoj Kumar Mishra stressed the need for stronger grassroots monitoring. He suggested appointing monitors in every village to prevent child marriages and spread awareness about their harmful consequences.

“Only through community vigilance and consistent awareness can Kandhamal become child marriage-free,” he said.

While child marriage remains deeply rooted in social practices, the coordinated efforts of child protection teams, police, and local communities continue to save young lives from being pushed into premature and unsafe marital bonds.
