Angul, Feb 13: Subrat Behera, a Junior Assistant in the office of the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Angul, was remanded to judicial custody until February 20 in connection with a disproportionate assets case, our source from the ground informed.

Behera was arrested by Odisha Vigilance on Thursday afternoon on charges of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

According to Vigilance officials, Behera was found in possession of disproportionate assets amounting to 205 per cent of his known sources of income, which he could not satisfactorily account for. In this connection, Cuttack Vigilance Police Station Case No. 7 dated February 12, 2026, has been registered against him under Section 13(2) read with 13(1)(b) of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.

The action followed allegations that Behera had misappropriated government funds to the tune of Rs 2.38 crore. Vigilance teams conducted simultaneous house searches at five locations linked to him. During the raids, officials unearthed substantial movable and immovable assets in the name of Behera and his family members.

Among the properties detected was a palatial triple-storeyed building measuring approximately 4,500 square feet located in Angul town. The searches also led to the seizure of around 450 grams of gold jewellery, bank and postal deposits worth Rs 35.96 lakh, two four-wheelers — a Skoda and a Polo GT 1.2 TSI — along with three two-wheelers, and household articles valued at approximately Rs 17 lakh.

Following detailed scrutiny of his income, expenditure and assets, Vigilance authorities concluded that Behera’s assets were 205 per cent in excess of his legitimate earnings.

Earlier, Behera had been charged with allegedly misappropriating Rs 2.38 crore by fraudulently drawing excess salary during the period from 2017 to 2025 while serving in the CDMO office at Angul. He allegedly credited the excess amount to his salary account maintained at the State Bank of India, Angul branch.

The investigation revealed that between 2022 and 2025, he drew basic pay ranging from Rs 3,36,100 to Rs 7,36,100, far beyond his entitlement. Additionally, from March 2021 to June 2021, he allegedly drew dearness allowance ranging from Rs 9,05,827 to Rs 14,06,300.

In connection with the salary misappropriation, Odisha Vigilance had earlier registered Cuttack Vigilance PS Case No. 6 dated February 9, 2026, under Section 13(2) read with 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and Section 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
