Bhawanipatna, Feb 12: A man was arrested for allegedly killing his pregnant wife with the help of an associate and burying her body at a farmhouse under Sadar police limits in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, our source from the ground informed Thursday.

The accused was identified as Lalit Patel from Saralanji village under Bhawanipatna Sadar police station limits. He was residing in Bhawanipatna town with his wife.

According to information available, a dispute had arisen between the couple after the woman came to know about her husband’s alleged extramarital relationship. Following this, Lalit allegedly conspired with his associate, Dushmant Gaud.

As per police information, on January 26, between 8pm and 9pm, the woman was allegedly taken to a farmhouse at Sripur. She was allegedly strangled to death using a rope. The accused then allegedly dug a pit nearly two feet deep on the farmhouse premises and buried the body.

The incident came to light on Monday when a watchman cleaning the farmhouse premises noticed a hand protruding from the soil and alerted the police. The body was subsequently recovered and sent for post-mortem examination.

Family members of the deceased woman later lodged an FIR at the Sadar police station.

Following Lalit’s arrest, police conducted a scene recreation at the spot with co-accused Dushmant. Both accused were detained at Bhawanipatna Sadar police station and will be forwarded to court on Friday, Kalahandi Superintendent of Police Nagaraj Devarakonda informed.

Further investigation is underway.
