Humane Sagar Death Case: Doctor Says Family Arrived Only When Condition Worsened

Key Points

  • Dr Sanjib Kumar Kar stated that singer Humane Sagar’s immediate family did not accompany him for treatment until his condition became critical in November.
  • Sagar had been undergoing treatment for liver cirrhosis linked to heavy alcohol consumption and later developed pneumonia, dilated cardiomyopathy and renal failure.
  • Police have registered an FIR against two of Sagar’s managers as the investigation continues.
Cuttack, Nov 23: In a major revelation in singer Humane Sagar’s death case, treating doctor Dr Sanjib Kumar Kar has stated that during the entire course of treatment, none of Sagar’s immediate family members accompanied him to the clinic until his condition became critical in November.

Notably, the 36-year-old singer passed away on November 17 at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he had been undergoing intensive treatment. His death has triggered widespread grief across Odisha, where he was celebrated for his influential contribution to the Odia music industry.

Dr Kar, a gastroenterologist, said Sagar had first come to him in 2024 and was already suffering from liver cirrhosis linked to heavy alcohol consumption. “His health sharply declined over the past month. He complained of fever and breathlessness, and the ECHO test confirmed weakening of the heart,” he said.

The doctor said he repeatedly advised Sagar to take medication and rest, and specifically asked him to avoid public programmes for at least 15 days. “I had warned him that losing him would be deeply painful for me. But he continued his scheduled performances,” Dr Kar stated.

In describing a key concern, Dr Kar said that for nearly a year, Sagar’s staff members — not his parents or other immediate family — brought him for treatment. “Only on the 12th, when his condition had become serious, did his mother come to the hospital,” he added.

According to him, while alcohol-related liver disease was the underlying condition, Sagar ultimately died due to a combination of pneumonia, dilated cardiomyopathy and renal failure.

Meanwhile, police on Friday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against two of Sagar’s managers. The FIR, lodged at Balangir Town Police Station, names Prashant Behera and Dinesh Behera as accused. The investigation is underway.
