Nabarangpur, Sep 29: An 80-year-old woman was allegedly dragged into the Khutgaon forest and raped by a youth under Raighar police station limits in Nabarangpur district, a source said on Tuesday.

Police have detained one suspect identified as Pilaram Gond, a resident of Koliapodar village in Kurabeda gram panchayat.

Woman Rescued, Accused Handed Over To Police
According to the source, the elderly woman was walking to her daughter's home in Khutugaon on Monday when Pilaram and two of his friends were passing along the same road. The woman was allegedly dragged into the forest and raped after the three men found her alone.

Meanwhile, some youths passing through the area heard the elderly woman's screams and entered the forest. They found Pilaram leaving the spot after assaulting the octogenarian woman and apprehended him. However, two associates of Pilaram fled the scene.

Subsequently, the villagers admitted the victim to a hospital in Raighar for treatment and handed Pilaram over to the local police.

The woman's son lodged a written complaint at Raighar police station. Afterwards, police detained Pilaram for questioning.

Locals Raise Safety Concerns
A local woman said, "The law and order situation has completely deteriorated in our village. The accused was earlier jailed in a rape case. He came out on bail and he raped an 80-year-old woman. The elderly woman was on her way to her daughter's home when the accused, along with his friends, sexually assaulted the woman. It is disgusting."

Another woman said, "What kind of justice will the authorities give us? He was earlier jailed in a rape case. Yet, he has the audacity to rape again. If an 80-year-old woman is not safe in this village, how can we expect that our daughters, sisters and ourselves will be safe from these monsters?"
