Sambalpur, Sept 2: In response to increasing water inflow from the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River, authorities at the Hirakud Dam opened four additional sluice gates on Tuesday evening, bringing the total number of open gates to six.
This strategic move aims to regulate the rising water level and prevent downstream flooding, officials said.
As of Tuesday evening, the water level at the reservoir stood at 626.43 feet, approaching the full reservoir level of 630 feet. Officials said a significant inflow of 80,118 cusecs per second, prompting the need for controlled discharge. The dam’s management is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with district authorities to ensure public safety.
