Rain Fury / Heavy Rain Raises Water Levels In Koraput Dams; Seven Gates Opened Across Reservoirs

Koraput, Sep 25: Continuous rainfall over the past few days has led to a rise in water levels across major reservoirs in Odisha’s Koraput district, prompting the administration to release water through several gates, officials said on Friday.

According to the district administration’s latest bulletin, the Upper Kolab reservoir recorded a water level of 854.67 metres, against its full reservoir level of 858 metres.

At the Telengiri reservoir, the water level stood at 631.38 metres, with one gate opened to regulate inflow.

The Upper Indravati reservoir registered a level of 641.49 metres, where five gates have been opened. Of these, two gates are located at Muran in Koraput and three at Podagada in neighbouring Nabarangpur district.

Meanwhile, the Machkund dam reported a water level of 2,583.7 feet, with one gate opened. The Jalaput reservoir stood at 2,741.4 feet, though no gates have been opened there.

In total, seven gates across major reservoirs in Koraput district are currently open to manage rising water levels.

Officials said the decision to release water was taken to maintain reservoir safety and prevent overflow amid continuing rainfall. The administration has urged residents in downstream areas to remain cautious and avoid venturing close to riverbanks.

Koraput, which houses several key hydroelectric and irrigation projects, often faces heightened flood risks during prolonged monsoon spells. The coordinated release of water is aimed at balancing reservoir storage with flood management.

Authorities are closely monitoring inflows and rainfall forecasts, with emergency teams kept on alert to respond to any eventuality, officials said.
