Heavy showers lash Puri on Saturday morning.

Key Points

Heavy rainfall lashed Puri on Saturday morning, bringing relief from a week-long spell of intense heat and humidity that saw the city record a 130-year October temperature high. However, residents of several low-lying areas fear renewed waterlogging due to poor drainage.

Puri, Oct 10: Heavy rain lashed Puri city in Odisha on Saturday morning, bringing much-needed relief to residents and pilgrims after a week of unusually high temperatures and oppressive humidity that had gripped the temple town.

The rainfall ended a prolonged spell of sultry weather that had persisted despite the arrival of the autumn season. For the past seven days, daytime temperatures remained consistently above 35 degree Celsius, causing considerable discomfort to both locals and the large number of devotees visiting the pilgrim city.

Earlier this week, Puri witnessed a historic weather event when the mercury touched 36.6 degree Celsius, the highest October temperature recorded in the town in nearly 130 years. The unseasonal heat had triggered concerns among residents, who described the conditions as more typical of peak summer than the month of Ashwin.

The showers on Saturday brought down temperatures significantly and offered respite from the relentless heat and humidity. Many residents welcomed the sudden change in weather, describing it as a much-needed break after days of sweltering conditions.

However, the rainfall has also revived concerns over waterlogging in several low-lying parts of the city. Residents fear that any further spell of heavy rain could aggravate existing drainage problems and lead to inundation in vulnerable localities.

Areas such as Matitota, Kaibalya Nagar, Mukunda Mishra Nagar, Gopinathpur and Bharatipur remain susceptible to water accumulation as drainage and water evacuation issues are yet to be fully addressed. Residents said incomplete drainage infrastructure continues to pose challenges during periods of intense rainfall.

While the rain has brought welcome relief from the scorching heat, it has simultaneously highlighted the city's recurring monsoon-related concerns. Civic authorities are expected to remain on alert as forecasts indicate the possibility of further rainfall in the region.

For now, Puri's residents and devotees are enjoying a respite from the record-breaking heat, even as those living in low-lying areas keep a wary eye on the skies.
