Bhubaneswar, Oct 9: A group of 40 students from a Bhubaneswar-based university visited the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) here to study Odisha's widely acclaimed disaster resilience model and gain insights into the state's best practices in disaster preparedness and response, officials said on Friday.
Odisha’s remarkable transformation from a disaster-prone state to a nationally recognised model of disaster resilience has become a subject of study for aspiring disaster management professionals, they added.
During the visit, OSDMA Advisor Dr Kamal Lochan Mishra briefed the students on Odisha’s journey in disaster management since the devastating Super Cyclone of 1999. He explained how the state has developed a robust framework focused on early warning dissemination, preparedness, timely evacuation, community participation and the use of modern technology for effective disaster risk reduction.
Dr Mishra highlighted that lessons learned from past
disasters have played a key role in strengthening Odisha’s disaster
preparedness and response mechanisms. He stressed the importance of practical
exposure and encouraged students to undertake research in the field,
particularly on the role of emerging technologies and data-driven solutions in
reducing disaster risks.

Discussions centred on the state's proactive management of cyclones, floods and other natural disasters, an approach that has earned appreciation at both national and international levels.
The educational visit was aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of disaster preparedness, mitigation and response strategies while motivating them to contribute towards building safer and more resilient communities.
Officials said such initiatives help bridge the gap between
academic learning and real-world disaster management practices, enabling
students to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in
the sector.
