Puri, Dec 19: Chilika Lake has once again become a paradise for migratory birds, with lakhs of foreign species flocking to its wetlands this season.

 

Key birding sites such as Mangalajodi, Nalabana, and Sundarpur are witnessing a spectacular congregation of winged visitors.

 

This year, Nalabana has recorded a particularly high number of flamingos, adding vibrant hues to the landscape. In Sundarpur, birdwatchers have spotted the Pied Avocet for the first time, a rare sight that has delighted environmentalists and ornithologists alike.

Experts note that the arrival of such diverse species underscores Chilika’s importance as one of Asia’s largest wintering grounds for migratory birds. Conservationists have expressed happiness at the growing diversity, calling it a positive sign for the lake’s ecosystem.

 

Chilika, spread across Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam districts, is recognised as a Ramsar wetland site and attracts bird lovers from across the globe during the winter months.
