Kataka, Sep 15: Tension prevailed at a private hospital in Jagatpur following the death of a 60-year-old patient, with his family alleging medical negligence and claiming that no doctor was present when he was admitted.
The deceased was identified as Bijay Panda from Bhubanpur area in Jagatpur.
According to his family, Panda was brought to Satyam Hospital on Monday evening after he complained of severe chest and stomach pain. The family alleged that his condition deteriorated during treatment and that he subsequently died at the hospital.

Family Alleges Absence Of Doctor
Panda’s niece Suchismita Panda alleged that the family reached the hospital at around 8:45 pm and claimed that no doctor was present at the time.
She said the patient was shifted to the ICU after he complained of severe pain and that the family was later informed that an ECR procedure was being planned. According to her, the family arranged a ventilator-equipped ambulance and requested that Panda be discharged so he could be shifted elsewhere, but the hospital allegedly did not allow the transfer, saying that the patient was being prepared for intubation.
Suchismita further alleged that the family was informed around 12:45 am that Panda had died. She claimed that a doctor arrived at around 2 am and asked the family to sign the ECR-related document.
Hospital Owner Denies Negligence
Hospital owner Sumit Kumar Lenka rejected the allegations, saying the patient’s condition was serious when he arrived and that he was immediately shifted to the ICU for treatment.
“The allegations are baseless. When a patient comes to the hospital, our first job is to save the life rather than taking consent for ICU,” Lenka said.
He also said the patient had a gastric problem and was in a serious condition, but maintained that there was no negligence in the treatment.
However, when newsmen questioned Lenka about the alleged unavailability of doctors, the absence of a doctors’ duty list and compliance with fire safety norms, he did not provide clear answers.
Police Deployed At Hospital
Following the death and the ensuing tension, Jagatpur police were deployed at the hospital premises to prevent any escalation. The exact cause of Panda’s death and the allegations of medical negligence are yet to be established.
