Angul/Bhubaneswar, May 12: A tragic incident was reported from Athmallik area of Odisha's Angul district, where an elderly man died after suffering an electric shock while attempting to save his granddaughter, a source said.

The deceased was identified as Ratnakar Sahoo from Jagdalpur village under Paikasahi panchayat in Athmallik.

According to the source, the incident took place on Tuesday morning when the granddaughter was drying wet clothes on an electric wire and accidentally came in contact with a live current.

On noticing the incident, Ratnakar rushed to save the girl. However, both of them came in contact with the electric current and sustained serious injuries.

They were immediately shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Angul for treatment.

Doctors later declared Ratnakar dead, while the granddaughter is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Police Foil Alleged Kidnap Bid Of Student
The Commissionerate Police claimed to have foiled an alleged kidnapping attempt involving a girl and her current boyfriend, who were reportedly trying to abduct her former boyfriend.

Several accused persons allegedly involved in the kidnapping attempt have been detained for questioning, a source informed.

According to preliminary information, the girl is a resident of Kendrapara district, while her former boyfriend is a resident of Jajpur district.

The source said all the detained accused are students of a private educational institution.

Investigators are trying to ascertain the exact motive behind the alleged abduction attempt and whether there were any prior disputes between the parties involved.

Police suspect that some locals may have assisted the accused during the attempted kidnapping.

Further investigation into the incident is underway.
