Baripada, Sep 4: A 56-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her 19-year-old son following a quarrel at their home in Barjupur village under Sadar police station limits in Mayurbhanj district, a source said on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Srimati Singh. Police arrested her son, Kuiyan Singh, in connection with the alleged murder and launched an investigation.
According to the source, Kuiyan had a history of substance abuse and frequently quarrelled with family members over his habit of taking rice and paddy from the house and selling them. He had worked in Chennai for some time before returning home around 20 days ago.
On Thursday night, Kuiyan allegedly returned home in an intoxicated condition. A quarrel broke out between him and his mother over an issue. During the argument, Kuiyan allegedly pushed Srimati forcefully, causing her to fall to the ground.
The deceased was identified as Srimati Singh. Police arrested her son, Kuiyan Singh, in connection with the alleged murder and launched an investigation.

He then allegedly strangled her by pressing her neck. Subsequently, Srimati died at the spot.
After receiving information about the incident, Sadar police reached the village and recovered the body. It was sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Police subsequently arrested Kuiyan and are questioning him as part of the investigation. Further details are awaited.

The incident comes days after police identified an elderly woman whose body was allegedly found buried beneath the kitchen floor of a rented house at Masjid Lane in Puri’s Kumbharpara area on August 24.
On September 2, Puri SP Prateek Singh said the deceased was Arnapurna Dalei, a resident of Kharada village under Kasipur police station limits in Gajapati district. Police suspect that she was killed by her 42-year-old son, Madan Dalei, who remains on the run.
