According to reports, Sarojini’s husband Bikram Mallik, allegedly addicted to alcohol, demanded money from her. When she refused, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire.

Neighbours and family members rushed to her aid, but she sustained extensive burns despite her motherinlaws desperate attempt to save her.

Sarojini was initially admitted to the district headquarters hospital before being shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar and later to a private medical facility, where her condition remains critical.

Her motherinlaw, devastated by the incident, said, Even if my son is punished, it will not be enough. He destroyed his own home. My daughterinlaw was like Goddess Lakshmi to us.

Police have detained Bikram Mallik at Kumbharpada police station, and further investigation is underway. A forensic team has collected samples from the crime scene to aid the probe.

The incident has sparked outrage in the locality, with residents condemning the brutality. According to locals, Sarojini had been supporting her husband by buying medicines and health tonics, but his addiction to alcohol and repeated demands for money led to the tragic turn of events.
