Digital Deception: Fake WhatsApp Challan Robs Mechanic of ₹10,700 in Cyber Scam

Bhubaneswar, Oct 29: In a shocking case of cyber fraud, a garage mechanic named SK Jiaul Haq from Bhubaneswar became the latest victim of digital deception after receiving a fake challan via WhatsApp.

 

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when Haq received a message from an unknown number claiming to be related to a traffic violation involving his vehicle.

 

The message included a challan with his vehicle number and an APK file, which he was instructed to download for further details. Trusting the source, Haq downloaded the file, unknowingly granting access to malicious software.

Soon after, his bank account saw a series of unauthorized deductions: ₹1 initially, followed by ₹9,999, and finally ₹700 — totalling ₹10,700 siphoned off in three installments.

Realizing the fraud, Haq promptly approached the Cyber Police Station and filed a formal complaint. The cyber cell has launched an investigation into the matter and is working to trace the origin of the fraudulent message and the APK file.

 

Cyber experts warn users against downloading unknown APK files, especially those received via messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Such files can contain malware designed to steal sensitive information, including banking credentials.

 

The incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime targeting unsuspecting individuals through personalized and convincing messages. Authorities urge citizens to verify the authenticity of any digital communication related to fines, payments, or official notices before taking action.

 

As digital platforms become more integrated into daily life, the need for awareness and caution is more critical than ever. The Cyber Police continue to monitor such cases and advise the public to report any suspicious activity immediately.
