Bhubaneswar, Oct 25: As a potential cyclone looms over the Bay of Bengal, Odisha Revenue Minister chaired a high-level review meeting to assess preparedness across vulnerable districts.
The system, which originated as a low-pressure area, has now intensified into a depression and is located approximately 1,000 km from Gopalpur. It is expected to move northwestward and may develop into a cyclone, with its impact likely on October 28 and 29.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated
that the cyclone’s trajectory could shift, prompting the Odisha government to
prepare for scenarios affecting up to 30 districts. Currently, 15 districts
including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khordha, and
Kendrapara are expected to be directly impacted.

Health, Agriculture, Energy, and Cooperation to activate early preparedness
measures. The decision to cancel leave for government officials will be taken
on Sunday. A decision regarding school closures will also be taken on Sunday after
further assessment.
Relief centres, cyclone shelters, and evacuation plans are being readied. Fishermen at sea have been advised to return immediately, and arrangements for cooked food will be made for displaced residents as long as waterlogging persists. The primary goal, officials emphasized, is to safeguard lives.
The administration is also preparing for potential landslides in hilly regions and has instructed district authorities to take preventive measures. Roads prone to flooding will be closed on both sides, and food arrangements will be made for stranded travelers.
A follow-up meeting with district collectors is scheduled
for Sunday evening, when the cyclone’s path will be clearer. The government has
assured citizens that all steps are being taken to ensure safety and urged
people not to panic.
