Cyclone Alert: Odisha Braces for Late October Storm Threat

Key Points

Three low-pressure systems forecast and the third may intensify into a cyclone.
Government places southern region in red zone for preparedness.
Monsoon transition and sea temperature favour storm formation.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: Weather experts have raised concerns over a possible cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal towards the end of October, following multiple low-pressure systems predicted to emerge in quick succession.

Renowned meteorologist Dr. Sarat Sahu has indicated that three back-to-back low-pressure zones could develop, with the third one potentially intensifying into a cyclone.

According to Dr. Sahu, the American GFS model has hinted at cyclonic activity, and his own analysis supports the possibility. The first low-pressure system is expected around October 22–23, likely affecting Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh more than Odisha.

The second system may form around October 25–26, while the third and strongest is projected for October 29–30, with its impact possibly felt in coastal, southern, and interior Odisha during the first week of November.

Although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any official cyclone alert yet, the Odisha government has begun preparations. Revenue officials have placed southern Odisha under the red zone, heightening public concern.

Dr. Sahu explained that the current transition from southwest to northeast monsoon, combined with warmer sea temperatures and cooler land conditions, creates an ideal environment for cyclone formation. He emphasized that the third low-pressure system could gain strength from the preceding ones, increasing the likelihood of a full-fledged cyclone.

With three systems forming in rapid succession, meteorologists warn of heavy rainfall and strong winds in parts of Odisha.
