Baleshwar, Sep 13: Baleshwar district witnessed two shocking incidents of mafia violence against enforcement agencies, highlighting the growing threat posed by illegal liquor and drug networks.
On Friday, an excise intelligence team from Cuttack Central Zone, Unit‑2, intercepted a pickup van suspected of carrying country liquor near Nayakbandh Chhak on National Highway‑16 in Soro.
The vehicle, bearing registration number OD‑01‑C‑5108, was stopped for inspection. As officers began checking, youths escorting the van allegedly hurled stones at the excise department’s Bolero vehicle and rammed it, causing damage.

✨Despite the attack, the excise team continued its operation and discovered a large quantity of country liquor inside the pickup.
The vehicle was seized, and Tapan Mallik of Ghataghara Sahi in Nilgiri was arrested. Investigations are underway to identify others involved in the assault on the officials.
In a separate incident late Saturday night, drug mafia members attempted to kill police personnel during a raid. Acting on intelligence about drug trafficking, a patrol team moved in to intercept suspects.
However, the accused allegedly drove a car into the police team in an attempt to run them over. Constable Nityananda Senapati sustained serious injuries in the attack.
Police quickly launched a counter‑operation
and arrested two prime accused, Vicky Parija and Jaki Parija. However, three
other suspects managed to flee the scene. Raids are continuing across multiple
locations to apprehend the absconding accused.
