Keonjhar, Jan 14: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi marked the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti by taking holy dips in the Baitarini River at Shaibya Kaberi Ghat in Rajnagar, Keonjhar district.

The ritual, deeply rooted in Odisha’s cultural and spiritual traditions, drew thousands of devotees who gathered along the riverbanks to perform the sacred bath and offer prayers.

The Chief Minister’s participation added significance to the celebrations, as Makar Sankranti is considered one of the most important festivals in the state.

Devotees believe that bathing in the Baitarini River during this time absolves sins and brings blessings. The Shaibya Kaberi Ghat, known for its religious importance, witnessed vibrant activity with chants, offerings, and community gatherings throughout the day.

Following the holy dip, the Chief Minister extended greetings to the people of Odisha, emphasizing the festival’s role in fostering unity, devotion, and cultural pride. He also interacted with devotees and reviewed the arrangements made by the district administration to ensure smooth conduct of the rituals and the accompanying fair.

The event highlighted Keonjhar’s rich heritage and the enduring faith of its people, turning the riverbank into a hub of devotion, festivity, and tradition.

According to local legend, during the Treta Yuga, Goddess Sita bathed in this very kund while Lord Ram was in exile, giving the site a unique sanctity.

After bathing in the river and kund, devotees offered prayers at nearby Shaiva shrines and enjoyed traditional delicacies such as pitha and pana brought from their homes. The festive atmosphere extended to the Makar Mela, where people shopped for various items and relished the fair’s lively spirit. Pilgrims arrived not only from Keonjhar but also from neighboring districts like Mayurbhanj and even Jharkhand.
