Bhubaneswar, Nov 1: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Odisha has taken a significant leap in the semiconductor manufacturing sector.
On Friday, the foundation stone for a new semiconductor
manufacturing unit by SiCSem Pvt. Ltd. was laid at Info Valley, Bhubaneswar. The
project, with an investment of ₹2000 crore, is expected to generate employment
for around 1,000 professionals.

Speaking at the event, CM Majhi emphasized that Odisha’s
journey in the semiconductor domain is gaining momentum. “This is not just
about bricks and cement; it’s a symbol of aspiration, stability, collaboration,
and self-reliance,” he said. The semiconductors produced at this facility will
be used in advanced sectors such as missiles, electric vehicles, defence
equipment, railways, and solar energy.

In a major boost to research and innovation, SiCSem has also established a Research and Innovation Centre at IIT Bhubaneswar with an investment of ₹64 crore.
Additionally, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved ₹5 crore from his MP LAD fund for setting up a ‘Namo Semiconductor Laboratory’ at IIT Bhubaneswar. This lab will provide students with advanced opportunities for research in semiconductor technology.
CM Majhi highlighted that what used to take years is now being accomplished in months, showcasing the speed and strength of a new India. “After Bengaluru, Odisha is emerging as the new electronics and IT capital of India,” he added.

leadership for propelling India from chip to system-level missions and
emphasized Odisha’s growing role in achieving self-reliance in semiconductor
and electronics manufacturing.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji and Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw ji for their steadfast support in positioning Odisha as a key hub for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. The Centre’s guidance and the India Semiconductor Mission’s initiatives have enabled the State to attract world-class investment, cutting-edge technology, and high-value employment opportunities,” CM Majhi wrote on X.
“Today’s Bhoomi Pujan & Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Compound Semiconductor Fab & ATMP Facility (a project by SiCSem Pvt. Ltd., approved under the India Semiconductor Mission) at Info Valley, Bhubaneswar, marks a defining moment in Odisha’s semiconductor journey,” the post reads.
“With a capital investment of ₹2,067 crore, this unit will create 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, and achieve an annual output of 60,000 wafers with a packaging capacity of 96 million units. The company is also establishing a ₹64 crore Research & Innovation Centre at IIT Bhubaneswar, while the Union Minister has approved ₹5 crore from his MP-LAD fund for a ‘Namo Semiconductor Laboratory’ at the institute. These initiatives, along with the announcement of a Power Electronics Hub at IIT Bhubaneswar, will nurture innovation, research, and skill development in the State,” CM Majhi wrote further.
Two companies have already signed MoUs in Delhi to set up semiconductor units in Odisha, with a combined investment of ₹3000 crore. These developments are expected to position Odisha as a national hub for semiconductor production.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressing the event virtually, stated that Odisha is becoming the gateway to India’s eastern resurgence. He stressed the importance of integrating modern knowledge with industry and education, and called the new lab a golden opportunity for the youth.
Health, Family Welfare, Electronics & IT Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling also spoke at the event, noting that semiconductors play a crucial role in revolutionizing the IT sector and that Odisha is committed to fulfilling the vision of a developed India.
The event was attended by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, IIT
Bhubaneswar Director Shreepad Karmalkar, and industry leaders including Ranjit
Pendurthi (MD, Archean Chemical Industries), Guru Thalapaneni (MD, SiCSem Pvt.
Ltd.), and Jennifer Walls (CEO, Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd.).
