Bhubaneswar/Cuttack, Jun 13: The Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack arrested two accused in separate theft cases, recovering stolen valuables and cash following investigations aided by CCTV footage and surveillance.
Vehicle Boot Breaker Nabbed
In the first case, Chandrasekharpur police arrested an alleged serial vehicle boot breaker accused of targeting parked two-wheelers across the city.
The accused, identified as Satyajit Sahoo alias Jatia, allegedly carried out reconnaissance in various localities before breaking open vehicle storage compartments and stealing cash and valuables.
According to a source, the accused allegedly broke open the boot of a scooter in broad daylight on June 10 and fled with Rs 15,700 in cash and three expensive sunglasses.
The theft was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the area. Acting on the footage and subsequent verification, Chandrasekharpur police conducted raids at multiple locations and arrested the accused.
Police said three stolen sunglasses were recovered from his possession. The cops further revealed that Satyajit has previously been named in multiple criminal cases registered at Chandrasekharpur and Khandagiri police stations.
Customer Turns Thief At Jewellery Shop In Cuttack
In a separate incident, police arrested a man accused of stealing gold jewellery from a shop in Cuttack's Kaligali area under Lalbag police station limits.
The accused, identified as Rajesh Rout, allegedly entered the jewellery shop posing as a customer and asked to inspect gold ornaments. Taking advantage of an opportunity, he allegedly fled with several gold rings.
Following an FIR, police launched an investigation and tracked down the accused.
Addressing a press conference, Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said police recovered 18 gold rings weighing approximately 59.45 grams from the accused.
The theft reportedly took place on Thursday night.
Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain whether Rajesh has any previous criminal antecedents and whether he was involved in similar offences elsewhere.
