Bhubaneswar, Nov 17: Commissionerate Police on Monday arrested a drug peddler and seized 400 grams of brown sugar worth nearly Rs 40 lakh during a raid in the Airfield Police Station area here in Odisha, police said.

 

The accused has been identified as Sk Akbar, a resident of Arada Bazar (Golapola) under Sahadevkhunta police limits in Balasore district.

 

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Special Crime Unit (SCU) of Commissionerate Police launched a surveillance operation targeting the illicit brown sugar trade in Bhubaneswar.

 

According to police sources, Akbar was intercepted near Lingaraj Road Railway Station under Airfield Police Station limits while allegedly waiting to conduct illegal narcotics transactions. “Through swift and precise action, the unit seized 400 grams of brown sugar. The suspect was apprehended without resistance and is currently being interrogated to extract further details about their operations and network,” said a senior police official.

The Commissionerate Police, in a press statement, described the confiscation of such a substantial quantity of narcotics and the arrest of key individuals as a major advancement in their mission to safeguard the community. Officials reiterated their commitment to dismantling criminal syndicates and ensuring offenders are brought to justice.

Police said that the arrested individual will be produced before court as investigations continue to trace the supply chain, identify financial enablers, and uncover wider criminal affiliations. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to apprehend the principal accused, Sk Sadik Mohammad (30), also from Sahadevkhunta in Balasore, who remains at large.

 

Meanwhile, the Odisha Police urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the illegal sale of narcotics, stressing that community cooperation is vital in combating the drug menace.
