Cuttack, Nov 18: In a continued crackdown on narcotics, the Central Division of Regional Excise Department seized a quantity of brown sugar with an estimated street value of Rs 10 lakh on Tuesday.
The operation was conducted near the Rotary Eye Hospital in Sector-6 of CDA area in Cuttack.
According to officials, one person was arrested in connection with the seizure. He has been identified as Purna Chandra Das, a local trader. A two-wheeler used in the alleged illicit activity was also seized from his possession.
Following his arrest, the accused was produced before a local court by the Excise Department.
This seizure occurs against a backdrop of rising NDPS Act cases in Odisha. As per the latest available data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the state registered 1,891 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in 2023. This marks an increase from 1,642 cases in 2022 and 1,179 cases in 2021.
