Party faces disciplinary demands and growing factional tensions.
Bhubaneswar, Sep 20: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), once regarded for its disciplined structure and centralized leadership, is now facing a wave of internal dissent and factionalism. A series of bold statements from senior leaders has triggered a political storm, raising serious questions about the party’s leadership and future direction, political pundits said on Saturday.
Pandian’s Grip on BJD!
Rajya Sabha MP Debashish Samantaray has openly challenged the party’s internal functioning, suggesting that BJD president and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik no longer holds full command of the organization. He voiced support for fellow leader Shreemayee Mishra, who was allegedly sidelined during candidate selection and subjected to unfair treatment.
Samantaray’s remarks have intensified speculation about the growing influence of V.K. Pandian, Patnaik’s close aide, in steering party decisions. He has also called for greater transparency and accountability in the party’s leadership, urging a clearer structure in how BJD is governed.

✨Adding to the turmoil, senior MLA Arun Sahoo admitted that BJD’s defeat in the 2024 general elections stemmed from inflated egos and internal conflicts. His revelations in the book ‘Saita Satya’ exposed sensitive details about the party’s inner workings. In a strategic move to contain the fallout, Pandian reportedly organized a press conference at Shankha Bhavan, BJD’s headquarters in Bhubaneswar, to restore Sahoo’s image and ease tensions.

Factionalism and Disciplinary Divide
The party is now split over disciplinary actions. While some demand consequences for controversial remarks made against women leaders, others question why similar action hasn’t been taken against those who allegedly defamed Shreemayee Mishra. Corporators Deepak and Ajit have criticized Manmath Rautray, demanding equal treatment in disciplinary proceedings.
Veteran leaders such as N. Bhaskar Rao, Lalbihari Himirika, and Harishankar Raut have recently left the party, signaling deeper unrest. Senior leader Ashok Raut has formally requested action against Manmath, while Arun Sahoo was persuaded to hold a press meet to calm tensions.
Leadership Under Scrutiny
Even in such a situation, no matter how much effort is made, the party leadership has failed to control the internal unrest within the BJD. Whether this ongoing fire of factional conflict will eventually die down or whether the very foundation of the party is undergoing a transformation remains uncertain.
