Vigilance Trap / Bhubaneswar RI Nabbed for Taking Rs5,000 Bribe

Bhubaneswar, Oct 5: The Odisha Vigilance on Monday caught a Revenue Inspector (RI) in Bhubaneswar red-handed while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs5,000 from an applicant for processing the issuance of a legal heir certificate, officials said.
The accused official, identified as Niranjan Singh, serves
as the Revenue Inspector of the Keshari Nagar Circle under Unit-VI in the State
capital. He was apprehended in a vigilance trap after allegedly demanding and
accepting the bribe from a complainant seeking the issuance of a legal heir
certificate.

According to Vigilance officials, the complainant had applied online on September 9, 2026, for a legal heir certificate following the death of his mother and younger brother. He had submitted all the required documents along with the application and was awaiting the necessary inquiry report to be prepared and forwarded to the competent authority for approval of the certificate.

✨Officials said the applicant had approached the Revenue Inspector three to four times requesting him to complete the verification process and forward the inquiry report. However, despite repeated requests, the official allegedly delayed the matter without assigning any valid reason.
The complainant further alleged that Singh repeatedly demanded Rs5,000 to process and forward the application to the concerned authority. Unwilling to pay the bribe, he approached the Odisha Vigilance and lodged a complaint.
Following verification of the allegation, Vigilance
officials laid a trap and caught the Revenue Inspector allegedly while
accepting the bribe amount from the complainant. The tainted money was
recovered and seized in the presence of witnesses.

The anti-corruption agency has launched a detailed investigation into the matter. Simultaneously, searches are being conducted at the accused official's residence and other linked locations to ascertain whether he possesses assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Further investigation is underway, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings, Vigilance sources said.
