Key Points

The scam was executed by cybercriminals posing as Customs Department officials.
Bhubaneswar, Nov 7: A shocking case of cyber fraud has surfaced in the capital city, where a retired chartered accountant was digitally confined and defrauded of Rs 1.5 crore over a span of ten days.

The scam was executed by cybercriminals posing as Customs Department officials, falsely accusing the victim of money laundering.

The fraudsters contacted the senior citizen and claimed he was under investigation for financial crimes. Using the pretext of a “digital arrest,” they manipulated him into staying confined at home while they siphoned off funds in two separate phases.

The victim, emotionally distressed, approached the Cyber Police Station and filed a formal complaint.

Acting swiftly, the cyber police managed to block Rs 12 lakh from being transferred further, potentially saving part of the stolen amount.

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious calls or online activity immediately.

A case has been registered and further probe into the incident is underway.
