Bhubaneswar, May 11: The long-standing demand of Bhawanipatna residents is finally set to be fulfilled, with the Public Works Department announcing the expansion of the Bhawanipatna-Khariar road from two lanes to a four-lane highway.
The project, aimed at improving connectivity and boosting economic activity in western Odisha, was confirmed by Odisha Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan.
The Works Minister stated that the upgraded road will create new opportunities for the people of Bhawanipatna and Khariar, while strengthening links between Kalahandi and Nuapada districts.

Faster and smoother travel will allow villagers to reach towns and markets more easily, while buses, ambulances, and private vehicles will benefit from reduced travel time and fuel costs.
Farmers and traders will be able to transport paddy, vegetables, forest produce, and other goods more efficiently, enhancing local economic growth.

✨Improved connectivity is expected to attract shops, petrol pumps, hotels, warehouses, and small industries along the route, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities. Access to schools, colleges, hospitals, and government offices will also become more convenient.
The wider road is anticipated to reduce accidents and draw more tourists to the region. During natural disasters such as floods and cyclones, the new road will ensure smoother access to interior areas, contributing to long-term development in western Odisha.
The project includes the construction of five major bridges and 15 smaller ones, along with the repair and renovation of the existing bridge over the Tel river.
The 70-kilometer stretch will cost approximately ₹640 crore, with an additional ₹91 crore earmarked for bridge construction.
Officials believe the four-lane road will play a crucial
role in transforming the region’s infrastructure, boosting trade, and
supporting socio-economic progress for years to come.
