Bhadrak, Dec 16: A major dacoity attempt was foiled after a police encounter in Bhadrak district, leaving a dreaded criminal seriously injured and hospitalised, a source said Tuesday.

The injured accused has been identified as Buddhia alias Kamalakanta Das from Tudigadia area in Soro block of Balasore district. He sustained a bullet injury to his right leg during the exchange of fire and was admitted to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital under tight security. Arrangements are being made to shift him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.

According to police, Kamalakanta and his associate were preparing to carry out a large-scale dacoity near the Charampa Mal Godown area under Bhadrak Town police station limits. Acting on specific intelligence, Bhadrak Town IIC Prabhanshu Mishra led a police team to the spot.

On spotting the police, Kamalakanta allegedly opened fire, firing four rounds in a sudden attempt to escape. Police retaliated in self-defence, during which Kamalakanta was hit in the leg and collapsed. His associate, however, managed to flee from the scene, police said.

Police recovered a firearm used by the accused, along with four live rounds, from the spot. A search operation has been launched to trace and arrest the absconding accomplices.

Police said Kamalakanta is a history-sheeter with more than 14 criminal cases registered against him across police stations in Balasore, Soro and Bhadrak, including cases of dacoity, snatching and assault.
