Weather Alert / Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure May Intensify, IMD Issues Alert

Key Points
IMD forecasts a low-pressure over Bay of Bengal by October 23. Models differ on cyclone potential, with Odisha under yellow alert for squally winds and thunderstorms on October 26-27.
Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: Meteorologists are closely tracking a possible low-pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal, expected to develop by October 23 in the southeast and adjoining east-central region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system may gradually move northwestward and intensify further, though its eventual strength and trajectory remain uncertain.
While several global weather models differ in their projections, they indicate potential intensification. The American GFS model suggests cyclone-level strength by October 24, whereas the European ECMWF model points to stronger development between October 26 and 27.

✨Similarly, the IMD-GFS model indicates possible cyclone formation around October 28. Path predictions also vary, though most models hint at a movement towards the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coast.
IMD has clarified that, as of now, Odisha faces no immediate threat, and no cyclone warning has been issued. However, a yellow alert has been sounded for October 26-27, forecasting thunderstorms with lightning and squally winds at 30-40 kmph across coastal and nearby districts.
Weather scientists noted that a clearer picture regarding cyclone formation and landfall possibilities will emerge after October 25, once the low-pressure system takes shape.
Authorities are monitoring developments closely, while residents in coastal regions have been advised to stay alert to official updates.
The IMD emphasized that the situation remains dynamic, and
further clarity on intensity, track, and landfall will depend on the system’s
evolution over the coming days.
