Bargarh, Nov 18: The world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Jatra festival has found its new Maharaja Kansa. After a rigorous selection process, Sushil Kumar Meher has been chosen to play the iconic role of Kansa in the upcoming edition of the festival.

 

The announcement was made at the office of the Bargarh District Collector by Mahendra Mahapatra, Vice President of the Dhanu Jatra Mahotsav Committee. This marks the conclusion of the much-anticipated audition process that determines the lead performers for the festival.

 

This year, 44 artists applied for the role of Kansa, out of which 36 appeared for auditions. After a competitive round of performances, Meher emerged victorious, securing the coveted role. His selection has been welcomed by the people of Bargarh, who eagerly await the grand enactment of the mythological drama.

The Dhanu Jatra festival, recognized as one of the largest open-air theatre festivals in the world, recreates episodes from the life of Lord Krishna.

The role of Kansa Maharaja is central to the narrative, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The announcement of the new Kansa is always a highlight, drawing immense public interest.

 

Alongside the selection of Kansa, auditions were also held for other important roles including Mahamantri, Senapati, Devaki, Narada, Akrura, Chanura, and Mushtika. Results for all positions were declared on Tuesday, finalising the cast for the upcoming festivities.

 

The Dhanu Jatra Committee expressed confidence that this year’s performances will uphold the rich tradition of the festival while bringing fresh energy through new talent.

 

With the selection process complete, preparations are now in full swing for the grand celebration that attracts visitors from across the globe.
