Puri, Feb 20: Hours after blocking the Puri NH on Friday, the Puri Bar Association has announced a bandh on February 27 to protest the proposed relocation of the district court to Balukhanda sanctuary.
The members of Lawyers Association today staged a road blockade, leaving ordinary people distressed. The agitating members blocked the National Highway for nearly five hours.
Starting at 10 a.m., lawyers sat on both sides of the Puri–Bhubaneswar National Highway near Malatipatapur bus stand, demonstrating against the court relocation.
The blockade brought traffic to a complete standstill, stranding thousands of commuters. Later, they withdrew the protest and called for a bandh on February 27.
As part of the protest, the association has declared that road blockades will be staged across the city. The bandh call is expected to affect normal life in Puri, with transport, business establishments, and public services likely to face disruptions.
The Bar Association has been voicing its opposition for several weeks, insisting that the relocation plan undermines accessibility to justice. Members have warned that the agitation will intensify if the government does not reconsider its decision.
Anticipating possible unrest, authorities have prepared for extensive deployment of police and paramilitary forces to maintain law and order. Security arrangements will be tightened around sensitive areas, including the court premises and major intersections.
