Keonjhar, Feb 27: A baby elephant died after accidentally falling into a well under Sadar forest range in Keonjhar district on Thursday night.
The mishap occurred at the well belonging to local resident Mohan Charan Mahant in Kathabaunsuli village.
According to forest officials, a herd of around ten elephants was passing through the area when the calf accidentally slipped into the uncovered well. Despite immediate efforts by the forest department to rescue the animal, the young elephant could not be saved.
The incident highlights the growing challenges of human-elephant conflict in Odisha, where wild herds frequently wander into villages in search of food and water. Open wells, unprotected pits, and agricultural fields often pose serious risks to elephants, especially calves.
Forest officials have initiated measures to recover the carcass and conduct necessary procedures. They also emphasised the need for greater awareness among villagers to cover or barricade wells and water sources to prevent such accidents in the future.
