Bhubaneswar, Aug 24: The Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Bhubaneswar has completed a decade of pioneering service, celebrating its 10th Anniversary with a National CME programme and Live Surgical Workshop on “Secondary Procedures in Brachial Plexus Injury.” The two-day academic event, held on August 21–22, brought together over 100 delegates from across India.

The 36-bedded modern Burn Centre at AIIMS Bhubaneswar has emerged as one of the most advanced burn care facilities in Eastern India. Over the past decade, it has successfully treated more than 1,500 burn patients, including critical cases from Odisha and neighbouring states, while also providing skin allograft support to victims referred from other institutions.

The Department’s achievements extend beyond burn care. It has performed more than 7,000 reconstructive and corrective surgeries, including 500 microsurgeries, 300 brachial plexus injury reconstructions, 300 congenital anomaly corrections, 200 Smile Train cleft lip and palate surgeries, over 250 RBSK cases, and nearly 3,000 trauma surgeries.

Looking ahead, the Department plans to establish subspecialty clinics, expand simulation-based surgical training, strengthen hyperbaric oxygen therapy, initiate hand transplantation, and set up a Skin Bank and Tissue Transplantation Unit. A major goal is to transform the Burn Centre into a Centre of Excellence in Burn Care, with emphasis on advanced treatment, rehabilitation, research, and innovation.
